Forage Pea Green Manure is a member of the legume family that is excellent at fixing nitrogen and has deep penetrative roots that help to break up the soil. It can grow up to 1 metre tall.

Forage Pea is excellent for overwintering and can be sown from September to November. It has good weed-suppressing qualities but its foliage is not as bulky as some other green manures that overwinter.

It could be sown with a lower growing green manure like red clover if weed suppression was paramount and adding lots of bulky organic matter in spring is required. It is, however, good enough to use on its own too.

Forage Pea Green Manure Seed Information

When to Sow: September, October, November.
Growing period: 3-6 months.
Ideal Soil Type: Most, especially Heavy soils
Nitrogen fixer: Yes.
How to Sow: Prepare the soil by roughly digging it over and removing any weeds. Lightly tread the soil, and then sow the seeds by broadcast sowing (i.e. scattering evenly) for good coverage. Dig in seed to a depth of 7cms. Rows can be sown but are not as good for weed suppression. Rake the soil and lightly firm and water well. In dry periods you may need to water until the green manure is established.
Care: The green manure should be cut down before flowering when the stems are nice and soft as they decompose quicker, retain more beneficial nutrients and are easier to incorporate into the soil. They can be dug into the soil by turning over into the top 15cms or left on the top as a mulch, the worms will drag down the organic matter and help to aerate the soil.
Sow Rate: 8 grams per square metre.
